Acton DHS

The concept of a high school in Acton can be traced back as far as 1927 when an old stone building on what is now School Lane near Robert Little Public School served as a continuation school and high school. A rapid increase in the school population saw a new building open as the high school on Acton Boulevard in 1954. This is now McKenzie-Smith Bennett School. Various additions were made to the school in 1955, 1959, and 1972. The present high school, on 21 Cedar Road, was officially opened on November 29, 1977, and the former building on Acton Boulevard became a middle school now amalgamated with M.Z. Bennett.

Our school motto is the Latin ‘Lux sit’ which means, ‘Let there be light.’ This we believe is the purpose of education. At Acton High School, with the support of our parents and the wider community, we hope to offer our students a wide range of academic, athletic, artistic, and social opportunities.

Our Mission Statement is: Shared Vision, Shared Growth” As originally published by Acton DHS

Robert Little Public School was originally one of two public schools in Acton, Acton Public School, and M.Z. Bennett P.S. As M.Z. Bennett Public School grew in size the community found a need to rename the Acton Public School, so in 1952 Acton Public School was renamed Robert Little Public School.

The community gave the school this name to honor the great educator from the local area, Robert Little. Robert Little was born February 7, 1835 in England. At the age of 13, he was appointed as Junior Assistant at the Lancastrian Night School in Edinburgh and two years later, Assistant Teacher in Sessional School of St. Andrew’s Parish. One might think that Martin Street Public School (Milton’s first school built in 1920), formerly Martin Street Middle School, formerly Milton High School, was so named because it was located on Martin Street.  This was not entirely so, as you will see below.  Martin Street Public School is named after an early settler to the region, Mr. Jasper Martin.
This town of Milton took root out of a settlement started by Jasper Martin in the early 1800s.  Mr. Martin, immigrated from Newcastle, England, with his wife Sarah and two sons on May 17, 1818.   He was granted 100 acres (405,000 m.) of land from the Crown in 1820, designated Lot 14, Concession 2, Township of Trafalgar, Halton County, in the District of Gore.  During this time, there were two principal property owners in the young town – the Martins and the Fosters.  Each of these founding families has provided names for several local landmarks that mark our heritage.  Both have schools named after them! For information: Contact the Milton Chamber at 905-878-0581 or info@chamber.milton.on.ca
